Racing game history

gpx001.jpg

Namco announced the release date for R:Racing Evolution recently as the 27th of November this year. I'm not sure whether to buy the PS2 version, the Gamecube version or the XBOX version, or maybe all 3 so I can compare them directly. Whilst browsing the Namco site I found an interesting new page had been added - Namco's Racing Game History. What surprised me the most was the date on Namco's first ever arcade racing game - 1969!! That's, like, World War II era... I wonder if my poor old grandpa, god rest his soul, played it?

On a sidenote, Gamespot has an interesting page: The History of Video Games. Apparently the first ever "tv video game" was made in 1958...

Winning Run was *the* racing game.. 3d with a high frame rate (for the time), dastardly difficult course but I must have spent 100s of pounds on the thing.

The best 5 arcade games of all time in my opinion are:

Marble Madness
OutRun
Winning Run
Starblade
Prop Cycle

Prop Cycle was an interesting game, although I didn't play it a lot...I used to play Daytona USA instead.

Unfortunately I've never seen Starblade (did anyone play the Playstation port?) In the same style I liked Galaxy Force II a lot.

No FZERO-AX in the top five?
What about Double Dragon/StreetFighter? :-)

The playstation version of starblade was bad quality FMV (full motion video) running at 15fps and with a sprite cursor on top.

It was awful. Originally Namco had a deal with Sony to release 6 games for the Playstation during its first half year of launch.

The only one they put any real effort in for was Ridge Racer. I can't even remember the other 3 but Starblade and Cyber Sled were very poor attempts.

Fzero-AX doesn't get into the top 5... yet, it takes time to become a classic.
