INDIVIDUAL ENTRY MAIN
The Otaku Getaway

The Getaway has recently been popular in England due to its fairly accurate rendering of London. (the game is fun even if it is basically just a splintered off version of Grand Theft Auto)

However, this encouraged some english "otaku"s to go around and re-enact the missions of the game at the real original locations as recently reported in The Register. What's interesting is that they have taken almost angle-correct shots from their "tour" and put them side-by-side with screenshots from the game so you can compare the realism.

This reminded me of a site I recently found on DigitalCity where they have made a tourable 3d version of Kyoto's shopping area which seems to have had a bit of effort put into it, take a look. There's always something strangely intriguing about seeing a place you know rendered into 3d. Please download the latest "Rover" plugin from here.

これで思い出したが、この間DigitalCityというホームページで京都の3D(VRML)ツアーを発見しました。自分が知っている町を3Dで見ると何かしらんけど感動する。ここから最新版のRoverのプラグインをダウンロードして下さい。

"The Gataway" is good game besides gameplay. :)
The control scheme is bad...
But, art direction is really impressive. Team Soho done a good job on this point. (menu design is also great.)
I'm looking forward to play the sequel.

In Japan, CAPCOM will release this game on this November.
The below homepage includes "Real" vs "VR" photos.
www.watch.impress.co.jp

Also, it seems UK developers like this way....
Project Gotham Racing 2 - Yokohama city (Bizarre Creations)
www.xbox.com

(Agian) Bizarre Creations previous game of Dreamcast - Metropolis Street Racer includes Shinjuku city...
www.gamekult.com

Many people want to leave the landmark from real or unreal scenes. Here are some examples.

Video game:
GT4 - Fuji Speedway circuit:
Fuji Speedway is the one of famous circuit in Japan and the circuit layout is high speed oriented.
However, the circuit layout will change for the safety reguration step of F1 Grandprix.
Therefore, the present circuit has historical value for racing fans to add as the new circuit of GT4.

Movies:
Spirited Away - from movie to paper model.

Harry Potter - from movie to paper model.

Event: - 3D model of famous cities.

TV program:
The skeletal domed building in Hiroshima which still stands to commemorate the dropping of the atomic bomb.
(High school student club project and TV program project for anti war)

In addition, these are "Real" + "VR" projects.

NASA - Synthetic Vision Systems
avsp.larc.nasa.gov

Real Site - for Military and Police
www.govcomm.harris.com

MAPCUBE - 3D map for car navigation system, etc...
www.mapcube.jp

Also, I'd like to say Shenmue series (SEGA - Dreamcast) is a life simulater of Japan and Hong Kong culture.
I heard that the development team researched the history of real weather in Yokosuka city around 1 years (from 1986 to 1987).
The game story based on 1986 and they realized a same condition in a game.
When you finished a game, the "magic weather" option appears on the option menu.
Then, player can select "Real 1986's Weather" or "Story Oriented Modify Weather" for the 2nd time of play.

Yes, nobody noticed it before finishing a game...

That "RealSite" website seems to have cool models of 3d cities, like NY:
www.govcomm.harris.com

On Xbox, in addition to Project Gotham Racing 2, Midtown Madness was released recently(www.xbox.com

It features quite faithful reproductions of Paris and Washington (although the weather in Paris in the game is not as cloudy as the "real" north European weather ;-)

That paper work from Spirited Away is amazing!

Not 3d graphics related, but,
I recall seeing on the TV recently that (maybe in Roppongi Hills) in Tokyo right now they apparently have an extremely detailed scale model of the whole of Tokyo. The shots I saw of it on TV looked amazing.
