| Generating Cities |

A few months ago, I was working on a car race demo during my spare time, and had few resources (no time, no tool) to create nice circuits. I started to read about city modeling, and had a play with an (half-finished) implementation of Parish and Pascal Mueller "City Engine"...

| Choro-Q Rent-a-car |
In Yahoo Japan's news last week was this latest adventure in rent-a-car madness. Crazy eh, its a one-seater electric powered car that is road-certified and can travel at a max speed of 50km/h. You can rent one for 6 hours at a time here in Kyoto for 5500 yen (quite reasonable all things considered). It's based on the Choro-Q series of radio-controlled cars. I want one!

Online |

Check out the online software sales ranking above. First impressions are that the enhanced version of Doubutsu no mori (Animal Crossing) is selling surprisingly well (no.2). Using a card reader you add new characters to the game by simply swiping cards you swap with your friends or buy from stores for 200 yen. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Lastly, it seems that xbox games just don't sell well here in Japan...

| GL 2.0 |
Looks like GL2.0 is slowly creeping closer to becoming a reality. The big question is, is anyone actually going to be using it for games, or has DirectX9 already got too much wind in its sails? Will be taking a closer look at siggraph.

Could Linux be coming to XBox without any hardware modification...?

AMUSEMENT VISION
F-Zero-AX has come to Kyoto! It is very well made indeed. How many years has it been since I've been excited by a arcade game I wonder...? The gameplay is similar to the N64 version (it might even be the same game engine?) but the graphics are so good its unbelievable its the year 2003. The screen has a high resolution, is wide and the 3d sensation is great! There was a monitor TV next to the arcade machine, but to be honest it just doesn't compare to the arcade screen. The movement of the cabinet was a bit violent, which to a non-exercising programmer such as myself gets to be a bit tiring. Place: ACHO Game Centre, 2nd floor, west side of teramachi just north of shijo.

| MEMENTO |

Dylan Cuthbert (President, Q-Games), and Giles Goddard (President, Vitei) are featured in the centrepiece of the new print magazine "Polygon". These two made the original Starfox and its probably the first time they've been interviewed together.
Unfortunately you have to buy a copy to read the full thing, but you can check out Polygon's news site for some interesting tidbits of gaming news.

Apparently Warthog is having to register a 750,000 pound loss this year due to a number of projects that aren't signed to publishers yet. Whilst reading this, it occurred to me that recently publishers are starting to steer clear of high-risk/high-return games and this is leading to an overall staleness of the gaming market. If these "90% of the profit is ours" publishers aren't taking the risks, then who the hell can? Certainly not the development houses with their measly "just enough to buy an extra teabag" 10%.

A few musical links To start with, for people who don't know it already (or don't use it already...) I suggest you get Peercast (P2P music streaming soft). You will find several excellent audio channels on there, many of them coming from Japan (a few local radios, or weird anime channels for instance), and a few other from the US, England or France (try RADIO404 Paris FR).
