もし、あなたの名前がピカチュウだったらどう思いますか？

実は「最近の子どもの名前」というコラムを読んだんだけど、光宙（ぴかちゅう）と言う名前が実際にあるそうだ。おいおい、マジかよと思いちょっと検索してみるとこんなページがあった。

たぶんアニメからと思わせる良夢（ラム） 、沙亜紗（サーシャ･･･宇宙戦艦ヤマト？） 、愛富（アトム） 、斜亜（シャア） 、眠民（ムーミン）。X-fileですか？朱佳里（スカリー）。間違いなく名前負けしそうな天晴（あまてらす）や紫姫（むらさきひめ）。いやいや、ツッコミ始めたらきりないんだけど親の願いがこもった名前だと思うのでやめておきます。

ゲームにちなんだ名前はそれでも少なくて、路斗（ろと･･･DQの勇者？）ぐらいしか見つけられなかったけど、ゲーム世代が子どもを持つ時代。是非、増えていってほしい。真利男（マリオ）、鼠似駆（ソニック）、員塀堕（インベーダ）とかいかがですか？

ちなみにコラムの中に登場するトライくんとアスロンくん（合わせてトライアスロン）のアスロンくんをAthlonと思ってしまったところにこの業界にいる性を感じずにはいられませんでした。

What would you do if the name given to you at birth was "Pikachu"?

I was reading a recent article about Japanese newly-borns' names and it mentioned a child afflicted with Nintendo's character as a name. Oy oy I thought, can this be serious? Then I came across this report and it appears the trend is more serious than could be possibly imagined.

The interesting thing, is the names aren't converted as-is, they are first converted to phonetically equivalent chinese characters (the characters themselves have meanings too) so they look like perfectly valid chinese-based names... until you read them outloud and they say "pikachu" or "Atom" or "Moomin". There is even a "Scully" (from the X-files) written in chinese characters!

Right now there are just a handful of names from game characters but as the current generation of gamers grows older I'm sure the number of "Pikachu"s, "Snake"s and "Pacman's in your child's class are going to increase.

Incidentally, if you ever have twins you might want to consider naming them "Tri" and "Athlon" as one poor misguided Japanese couple did (not to be mistaken for the Athlon chip which, providing AMD still exists, is probably what everybody will think when the kid's older).
